I have a feeling it will take me a while to put up Paris photos. I have so many. The city is beautiful (although the subway from the train station did not leave a good impression). Our train from Amsterdam to Paris actually got delayed for two hours because there was a minor strike in Brussels (wtf?? Every time I use the train system in Europe some country goes on strike for a few hours). Though it was a super fast train with semi-comfy seats, it was also full of prepubescent boys and some interesting foreigners- neither or which have yet discovered deodorant. needless to say I spent the four hours hiding under my jacket listening to podcasts.
Our apartment here is in the Marais district which I think it technically Paris’ Boys Town. Needless to say, I pass by more impeccably dressed snobby men in one minute than I can count on both hands. We are on the fourth floor, overlooking a small street lined with cafes. The apartment has huge french windows that open out into the air so that it constantly sounds like you’re outside when sitting at the breakfast table, or reading in bed. I feel like such a creeper, but I love looking through the windows of the apartments across the street. They’re so interesting.
the view from the apartment.
i love french buildings!!
i love the color of this place. so curious george!
a dog chasing ducks in the seine!
in front of the notre dame
i’m too tired to put up anymore right now (especially since it takes about 5 minutes to upload each photo here).
I have to say-scrolling through my photos of Amsterdam, they’re not too exciting. I was feeling more than a little exhausted at this point, and I also didn’t know how kindly the red-light district took to cameras.
We stayed in a little apartment, up the steepest stairs I have ever seen, with a view of a canal near the Amherst.
What I learned:
1. Dutch is a hideous language. o.m.g.
2. Javanese is a type of food, and it’s not bad. Even when the entire menu is in javanese.
3. The Dutch love cats!
4. Even though weed is everywhere, you’ll still find the shadiest people at the “coffee houses”. Why?? I thought I’d see blond blue-eyed vikings with joints!
The canal by out apartment.
the kitty who lived at a cafe we ate it. soooo sweet. soooo soft.
I know that that looks like gibberish up there but it’s not. Hygge is this special danish-only concept of “coziness”. The Danish declaration of independence would probably read “…pursuit of life, liberty and coziness.” One of the many strange things I have learned about this country. But who can argue really? This life aspiration only leads to candles, comfort and cheer. Not too shabby. Candles…ya they’re obsessed with candles.
I’m kind of getting into all these crazy snake sculptures they have around here (usually part of some elaborate and violent “viking destroying a dragon” type statue.
do you have a good dog?
a very danish picture.
Noah on the canal tour. I find this picture hilarious- mostly because the woman behind him looks like she could be some kind of mirror image…you know, with the hair and the shirt and the like.
the ed hardy of doors!
on the top of the Our Savior church tower. 400 steps. it was amazing.
and then there was the view.
this was the inside of the church. it’s the only one i’ve ever seen that isn’t totally dark and dreary. there were stars on the ceiling! the italians should take note- white paint does wonders. ;)
I have one leather-bound little journal that I wrote in while studying abroad in Italy, and, looking it over, I find it is mostly full of the catty boy/roommate/”did you hear…” drama that made it so much fun then, and so uninteresting now. (except when I do want to go back and remember why I really did hate so-and-so so much, which girl was the girl not to be trusted, or who had the first night out with all of the italians.
but i guess journals really are important things, since my brain only has so much capacity, and things that you would think are important to me, considering how long i have studied them (the entire french language, all of art history) don’t stand a chance when battling things like every seinfeld anecdote ever or what the “j” in homer j. simpson stands for, or a chronological list of every Law and Order detective ever.
So-in order to prepare for the inevitable, i hope to record as much as i can, using mostly my handy dandy iphone.
dad, photo-bombing what would have been an adorable brother/sister photo.
an awesome statue in the King’s Garden. The snake looks so real.
baby freaking ducks!!! (in the moat surrounding the king’s castle)
my favorite building so far. it looks like it’s made of bronze. maybe it is?
my first danish cappuccino.
the Nyhavn Canal. So pretty!
they use amazing aubrey beardsley-esque art nouveau fonts everywhere. and i love it
gorgeous hermes scarf. it is now my iphone’s wallpaper.
the best salad ever! i swear it was like it was made by an ADD chef. it had the weirdest ingredients (cucumbers, cornish pickles, pesto, tomatoes, roasted tomatoes, roasted artichoke hearts, proscuitto, bacon) which probably sounds disgusting but it was amazing.
things i have learned so far: British Airways is the worst, food in Copenhagen is surprisingly delicious and is not always entirely smoked herring, they wear the cutest rainboots.
We had our annual Spring Event fundraiser on Saturday evening. After 2 months of hard work, it’s finally over. I think I did a nice job matching the invitations to the look of the party.
The invites, RSVP cards and envelopes. (Obviously there is more information in the inside that is not as interesting to include in this post). Printed on natural white linen paper, while donor lists printed on vellum. All of the flowers/house, design stuff was painted by yours truely.
Me and my lovely boyfriend, who was also the hit of the evening.
My computer at work goes to “word of the day” dictionary definitions when the screen saver starts up, and today’s word just happened to be liberal. Just reading this definition, it’s hard for me to see how anyone could be against any of the things “liberal” stands for. This also goes with my theory that, if you were to look at any super hero villain, or movie villain in general, and really comb through their character flaws and what exactly makes them so evil, and were to then designate them to a poltical party, I absolutely 100% guarentee you that they would all vote republican.
"Our military wanted to go in there and just scorch the earth…but President Obama single-handedly understood what was at stake here. He alone understood the need to get DNA to prove the death…it was President Obama single-handedly and alone who came up with the strategy that brought about the effective assassination of Osama bin Laden," he said, adding, "thank God for President Obama.”
